Roll and Cover!!

I'd like to welcome and thank Mary for being today's guest blogger! I can't wait for her to share her ideas (that I know I can use now that I'm in 1st!) I hope that you'll visit her blog and maybe even become a follower :)

Hi there! I'm Mary from Mrs. Lirette's Learning Detectives. I'm thrilled to be guest blogging for Jessica while she is enjoying the great outdoors with the kid campers. :)

Do you ever Roll and Cover? It's one of those super simple math games that I love to play throughout the year.  There are many names for this type of activity.  Sorry folks, I have no idea who originally thought of it.  Nonetheless, they are a definite crowd-pleaser in my classroom.

My favorite Roll and Cover games are the ones that involve adding 3 numbers.  I've used these types of games in K, 1st, and 2nd grade.  Younger learners use the dice with the dots so they have something to count.  Older learners can use numbered dice so they actually have to add the sums mentally.

I almost always have a Roll and Cover game in one of my Math Partner Tubs.  Students can play it during math stations or math tub time.  These games are also great for tutoring!  My kids love to pick a partner and go outside the room with a parent volunteer for addition practice.  Want to know another time I use these?  Every now and again I'll print multiple copies of a game board or pull out "retired" boards so that I have enough for every pair of students in the class.  If I need a quick time-filler or something to keep my kids engaged on their own for a few minutes.....I'll pull these out.  It sure beats busy work and gets everyone involved.  It's a win-win for me and works every time.  :)

I usually "retire" a game board at the end of a holiday or month.  My
kids LOVE to guess what the next month's theme will be.  We've even
turned our guessing game into a graphing activity and an inferencing
activity before!  Here are a few game boards that we used this passed
year:

I created a new Roll and Cover game today just for you!
You can click on the image to download it for free.

You can click {Here} to download many of my other Roll and Cover freebies that I use throughout the year (including ones from the picture above).

I hope your littles enjoy these games as much as mine do!  Thanks to Jessica for having me over!  I hope you will stop by my blog and say hi sometime soon.

Thanks again Mary :) A freebie?! How amazing is that!!
Don't forget to check back tomorrow for our final guest blogger MJ from Teaching in Heels.
